Master Dong Kim was born in Ham-Pyung, Jeolla Province, South Korea. He had a childhood full of illnesses. He started a school a year late from the other kids because of his learning disability. He began to practice martial arts at the age of seven by observing other older practitioners in the parks. He received his first black belt in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 13. When Master Dong had moved to Seoul, he became exposed to a variety of martial arts' masters. He earned a black belt from Hapkido, Gum Do, and Kung Fu. He also became deeply committed to practicing the healing arts and the techniques of acupressure from Master Sung. From this experience, he began to teach students attending his high school.
In 1983, Master Dong earned his degree in Yin-Yang Diagnosis at Koryo Sooji Institution. Soon after, he moved to the USA in 1984. In 1989, he earned his BSW degree from Howard University. His martial arts skills were not only taught to adult students, schools, and sepcial programs, but also reached out towards children who live in shelters (DC Village, CCNV, Community of Hope). In 1997, Master Dong had founded the Homedo Movement in Washington DC.
